A TREE IN THE WOODS

Y2 workshops on woodwork, HKU

Fall 2020: Haotian Zhang, Tianying Li

Fall 2021: Tianying Li, Su Chang

Wood comes from trees. We tend to forget this apparent truth. Before a tree becomes a standardized material for construction, it goes through a series of laborious processes: peeling the bark, removing the knots, cutting its section with particular patterns for physical performances, to a point where its forelife is no longer recognizable.

The workshop examines the diverse images of trees: the actual tree, the recomposed tree, the symbolic tree, and attempts to reconstruct the technical and spatial narratives of different conditions of trees and woods.
